This project originally started out as a very large extension, but the clients then took the decision that they would rather pull down their existing house and start from scratch.
The site is in a mature development, built in the early 1980’s and comprises a mixture of unremarkable house types, typical of that era.
The intention was to have as large and luxurious a house as possible, on a reasonable budget and of course, within the constraints of the site. The planning department demanded that the house tie in with the surrounding house typology in form, scale and style, but the materials were updated in the use of smooth white render and a warm coloured, textured brick. Windows were kept as large as possible to allow as much light as possible into the house. The house has 5 bedrooms, a dressing room, 5 bathrooms, 4 public rooms, a large kitchen and a generously sized garage. In the design of the house it was important to keep an eye on costs at the same time as specifying some special fixtures and fittings to provide the “wow” factor demanded by the client. Low maintenance and durability were also extremely important.
Due to its size and the shape of the site, the house is necessarily quite deep plan. Sun pipes bring some natural light into the internal feature stairwell which has oak treads inset with led lighting and glass balustrades. The main bathroom is huge and has a calm spa like quality with its limestone tiles, custom made fittings and enormous whirlpool bath. In the kitchen red glass splashbacks are a feature. Opaque sliding glass doors, and also solid sliding doors have been employed throughout the house to allow rooms to flow into oneanother where and when required. All the internal doors in the house were custom made.
As well as a full architectural service I also provided an interior design service on this project. I provided a mood board for each room, with furniture layouts, furniture suggestions and material samples. The clients used these as a catalyst to help them decide which furniture to buy, and where to put it.
The clients are very happy with their house, which is completely unique to them and their needs, and this has been brought about in part by a very good working relationship.
