The brief for this project was to add 2 bedrooms and a new kitchen on to a small traditional cottage; the owners loved the beautiful location, but with 3 teenage children felt that they needed some extra space.
An existing timber conservatory to the rear made the question of where to locate the extension and how to join it to the existing house an interesting one. The solution was to build a 1.5 storey extension as an annexe to the main building, linked by a wide corridor that would also be a new entrance for the house. The annexe is located right at the edge of the site and effectively encloses and opens up to the back garden, creating a solid wall to the front and side of the site. It houses two bedrooms and two bathrooms on split levels, the bedrooms having spectacular views across farmland to the Firth of Tay.
The access corridor with new entrance has glazed screens to both sides, so visitors can see straight through the house to the deck, back garden and beyond on their arrival at the house.
The existing house has been remodelled and its layout rationalised, with a former bedroom and bathroom being knocked through into the old kitchen to form a large family kitchen dining space complete with woodburning stove.
This project is a good example of a harmonious juxtaposition of old and new. The extension sits against the old building but does not compete with it. Materials of the new extension are untreated larch cladding, smooth white render and slate and sedum roofs.
